Pastoral Care

Pastoral care, historically Christian in its origins, is an ancient model of spiritual and emotional support that today can be found in all cultures and traditions.

It is a term we use to describe the ministry of compassion, encouragement, and spiritual transformation that is so much a part of Christian life.

PASTORAL CARE TAKES MANY FORMS
Besides administration of the sacraments (only ordained clergy can do this) pastoral care takes many other forms: Visiting the sick and infirm; delivering a meal; reading to someone who cannot see; reaching out to others through phone calls, lunch meetings, and other social commitments.

IT MAY MEAN SIMPLY LISTENING
Pastoral care may also mean listening to someone who is struggling with a difficulty, being present during a time of pain, or praying with someone in a crisis.

Many people think of this work as being the job only of deacons, priests, and other clergy.

But beyond administering the sacraments, pastoral care is the responsibility of all baptized Christians, and is one of the most significant ways that we can do God’s work in the world.
